Congressional Art Competition Opens for High School Students

Congressman Rick Crawford (AR-1) invited high school students within Arkansas’ First District to participate in the 2014 Congressional Art Competition beginning now through April 11.

This annual competition—open to all Congressional Districts—allows students grades 9-12 to submit original paintings, drawings, collages, mixed media, computer-generated art, and photographs. From the artwork collections, each District will select a winner. District winners will receive free airfare to attend the national reception in Washington D.C. during June, where an overall winner will be selected.

In addition, each District-winning artwork will hang for one year in the Cannon House Office Building tunnel used by congressional members and guests to travel between the Capitol and congressional office buildings.

Congressman Crawford said he enjoys passing the artwork on his regular trips to the House Floor.

“The artwork brightens the tunnel,” Crawford said. “It becomes alive, because there are so many stories told through these pieces.”

Crawford said artwork from the First District always brings a smile to his face.

“We have some incredibly talented young artists from our District,” he said. “I take pride in showing my colleagues and guests how much Arkansas’ culture shines through these gifted young men and women.”

Interested entrants must submit framed pieces to Crawford’s Jonesboro (2400 East Highland Dr. – Suite 300), Cabot (112 South First St.), or Mountain Home (1001 Hwy 62 East – Suite 9) offices by April 11. The second, third, and fourth place winners will have their artwork on display at these locations.
