Last Saturday, a violent, EF3 tornado hit Jonesboro, causing extensive damage as it ripped through the heart of my hometown. As the storm carved out its path, businesses were destroyed and homes were flattened. But despite the incredible strength of the tornado, there have been no reports of fatalities and only minimal injuries. On a typical Saturday afternoon in Jonesboro, businesses and restaurants are filled with shoppers and patrons, all of whom would have found themselves vulnerable to this powerful storm.
We attribute these low numbers and the safety of Arkansans partially to their own cooperation with social distancing guidelines and business closures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we also attribute our safety to the excellent work of the local radio and news stations in the First District. Their expertise allowed them to be a steady but stern voice as they clearly communicated the impending danger to the residents of Northeast Arkansas. We applaud them for their swift response and dedication to our community.
I am greatly encouraged by the number of churches, local businesses, and individuals who have donated time, energy, and resources to help their neighbors during their time of need. As we face the daunting task of cleaning up our home and putting it back together again, I know the benevolent hearts and hard work of the people of Jonesboro will leave us stronger than ever before.
U.S. Senators John Boozman and Tom Cotton, along with First District Representative Rick Crawford, announced Thursday the state of Arkansas will receive $23.6 million from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
Congressman Rick Crawford sent Mr. Eades a flag that once flew on the U.S. Capitol. A gentleman that’s part of the greatest generation is humbled by all the love.
U.S. Senators John Boozman and Tom Cotton—along with Congressmen Rick Crawford, French Hill, Steve Womack and Bruce Westerman—urged President Donald Trump to support Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson’s request for a major disaster declaration due to COVID-19.
"It was a far from perfect bill. In fact, you might even have some folks that would argue that it wasn't a good bill. But there's really not much that we can do other than try to provide assistance where we can as quickly as we can," he said. "Given the circumstances, doing nothing doesn't seem to be a very palatable option."
