The COVID-19 outbreak has created new challenges in most of our lives. Many folks are left unemployed, grocery stores are struggling to keep their shelves stocked, and farmers are experiencing extensive labor shortages.
In our effort to flatten the curve, strict travel restrictions have been put into place and almost eliminated our farmers’ main source of labor, the H-2A visa program. Adding fuel to the fire, this comes at a time when farmers are most dependent on foreign labor to plant their fall crops and harvest their summer crops.
This week, I launched the Farm and Ranch Mission (FARM) Corps in partnership with the Arkansas Farm Bureau, the Arkansas Department of Agriculture, the Arkansas National Guard, the University of Arkansas - Division of Agriculture, and the Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs. The FARM Corps will connect willing veterans who are struggling with the loss of their job with local farmers and ranchers who are suffering labor shortages caused by COVID-19.
Now is the time to protect our food supply. Food security is national security, and no two groups understand that better than the farmers who produce our food and the service members who secure our nation.
U.S. Representative Rick Crawford announced a new program that looks to connect farmers with those out of a job.
The program is called Arkansas FARM Corps. Crawford said with the current COVID-19 pandemic causing strict travel restriction, many farmers are experiencing a labor shortage in areas where foreign labor from the H2A visa program typically was.
Lawmakers at the state and federal level are struggling to find solutions that will allow them to maintain social distancing while still working to pass legislation.
In early March, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) and Rep. Rick Crawford (R-Ark.) introduced the ‘Mobile Resolution,’ which would permit remote voting and conference attendance. Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) introduced a similar resolution in the Senate, which had seven Republicans, two Independents and seven Democrats as cosponsors.
U.S. Senators John Boozman and Tom Cotton, along with Congressmen Rick Crawford, French Hill, Steve Womack, and Bruce Westerman, applauded the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for awarding federal funds to health centers across Arkansas to help facilitate the coronavirus response in our communities.
