 Defending Life

Last month, the World Trade Center glowed pink at the order of Governor Cuomo to celebrate the signing of a bill that calls abortion a “fundamental right.” The “Reproductive Health Act” gives mothers access to abortions through their third trimester if the pregnancy is deemed detrimental to their mental or physical health, but these standards were loosely outlined at best. Days later, Virginian Governor Ralph Northam defended a similar bill in his state by insinuating that some scenarios could justify abortions through labor or potentially after birth.

The value of human life should not be a partisan issue. Some try to justify abortion by claiming science cannot be sure when life begins, but this is simply not true. In 1942, human embryologists at the National Institutes of Health established a definite consensus that life begins at conception. Science never wavered from this fact, but so-called “pro-choice” advocates insist that these experts are wrong, or simply choose to ignore them. Not a single human embryologist was invited to testify at the Roe v. Wade hearings in 1973, and today, incredible effort is continuously asserted to deny empirical scientific facts.

Another popular argument by politicians and voters alike is that abortion is not about human life at all but about a woman’s right to make decisions for her body. This talking point is not only foundationally wrong, but it is shockingly selfish. Do we truly believe that the emotional well-being of an independent adult is more valuable than the life of a defenseless child? No circumstance should be considered too difficult or too stressful that it supersedes the value of a precious life.

I am proud to serve a state with some of the strongest pro-life laws in the country, but I also recognize there is still a lot of work to be done. I will continue standing up to those who try to devalue the life of unborn children and fighting for legislation that defends those who cannot defend themselves.

FAQ (What folks have been calling/texting my office about this week)

Q: What are your thoughts on the President’s State of the Union address?

A: I thought the President did a great job delivering his address earlier this week. The State of the Union highlighted the country’s accomplishments over the last year including economic growth, infrastructure, and efforts at trade negotiation, which our producers desperately need. President Trump was also the first president to include any remarks regarding abortion in the address in over 60 years. The focus was also on protecting our country from foreign threats at our southern border by increasing border security. I also appreciate the President’s remarks on socialism and echo his strong opposition at bringing socialism into our country.

Members of Arkansas' congressional delegation praise Trump's speech

Crawford said that after hearing Trump's address, he's convinced the ritual is important.

"That's why we have a State of the Union in the House of Representatives. The message that he gave tonight really reaffirmed why that's done and why it's so important," Crawford added.

The lawmaker said he also appreciated Trump's "rejection of socialism. I think it's important that we remind the next generation the colossal failures of socialism, and the most glaring example of that is what's taking place in Venezuela right before our eyes, and he made that abundantly clear."

Arkansan sees path for Cuba trade bill; Crawford measure stalled in past, but key dissenters have since departed

During the previous session of Congress, Crawford sponsored the Cuba Agricultural Exports Act, which would have allowed farmers and others to extend credit “to Cuba or to an individual or entity in Cuba.” The legislation also would have enabled Americans to invest in nongovernmental agricultural enterprises there.

While it would have allowed individuals to assume the financial risks, taxpayers wouldn’t have been left holding the bag if the debts went unpaid, Crawford has said.
