On Tuesday evening, President Trump addressed the nation, reiterating what he’s been saying for three years- we need border security. President Trump stated that he will not re-open shuttered Federal agencies without funds for border wall construction.
Despite this, House Democrats under Nancy Pelosi continue to waste legislative time and resources passing spending bills that will be dead on arrival in the Senate and would be subject to veto otherwise. The President’s request is clear, and it is reasonable. Every day, the shutdown costs the United States $1 billion, yet, the Democrats refuse to pass $5 billion for border barrier construction.
There has been talk of President Trump declaring a national emergency so that he can use military appropriations to build the wall. The President has various other legal avenues available to him through statute to unilaterally commence border wall construction, and I sincerely hope he does not have to resort to using them or declaring an emergency. Congress should reopen the Government, and appropriate wall funding. President Trump has made it clear that a wall or steel slat fence will be built, and it is entirely up to Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer if they get a seat at the table or not.
Increasing trade with Cuba has been a top priority of Arkansas lawmakers like U.S. Senator John Boozman and First District Congressman Rick Crawford. They say the new changes could be big for the states farmers.
The island nation of Cuba sits just 90 miles away from Key West, Florida.
But American farmers get almost none of the 2-billion dollars Cuba spends each year on agricultural imports.
U.S. Rep. Rick Crawford said Democratic leaders in Congress are willing "to place open borders and sanctuary cities above the safety and security of the American people."
"I sincerely hope that Speaker Pelosi and Minority Leader Schumer will take [trump] up on his offer and earnestly seek a solution to address this national security imperative as quickly as possible," the Republican from Jonesboro said in a written statement.
U.S. Rep. Rick Crawford, R-Jonesboro, said, “Tonight, the President restated what we already know — we have a looming crisis at our southern border and a majority leadership in the House unwilling to address this serious issue. Again, the President has opened the door to Congressional leadership in both chambers to quickly resolve this impasse.
“The responses by both Minority Leader Schumer and Speaker Pelosi to the President’s offer illustrates a stark contrast in their priorities indicating a willingness to place open borders and sanctuary cities above the safety and security of the American people. I sincerely hope that Speaker Pelosi and Minority Leader Schumer will take him up on his offer and earnestly seek a solution to address this national security imperative as quickly as possible,” he said.
