This week I had the opportunity to spend time visiting my constituents in the First District. I two fantastic visits in Newport at HOPE Place and Falwell Medical Clinic.
HOPE Place is a faith-based pregnancy resource center that opened about 8 months ago. They offer a variety of free services, including pregnancy testing, child birthing and breastfeeding classes, and education resources on abortion, adoption, and parenting. The center also features a baby boutique with a wide selection of baby necessities.
Opened in December, Falwell Medical Clinic is owned and operated by Nurse Practitioner Vanessa Falwell. Vanessa’s mission is to maintain an environment resembling the “old school” way of delivering healthcare by treating every patient as a person, rather than a number. They currently offer TB skin tests, drug screens, physicals, full lab testing, B12 shots, and are moving forward with adding additional services, as well as a cardiologist.
FAQ (What folks have been calling/texting my office about this week)
Q: What are your thoughts on the resolution intended to block the national emergency President Trump declared over border wall funding?
A: Securing our borders provides an unparalleled return on investment in terms of national security and we cannot have true immigration reform without a border wall. It is unfortunate that President Trump has been forced to resort to declaring a national emergency, but Congress has granted the President that authority through law. “We’re trying to engage with community leaders and recognize that economic development, you know, it’s nice to hit a home run like Big River Steel, but most of the region needs just to get on base,” Crawford said, noting that small businesses that hire 3-5 people can have a tremendous impact on smaller communities especially if several of them come online.
“If you can do that and expand that, and replicate that over and over again, well, they you’ve got the recipe for economic advancement,” he said.
U.S. Rep. Rick Crawford of Jonesboro suggested Democratic intransigence may result in an emergency declaration.
"It's unfortunate that it's come to this. But if Democrats in Congress are unwilling to help provide the necessary tools for the President to secure our borders and keep our nation safe, then he's left with very few options," he said in a written statement.
In this monthly congressional interview, Republican U.S. Representative Rick Crawford talks about the flood threat that constant rains pose to areas like Lake City and Pocahontas and what can be done, and he also talks about the looming governemnt shutdown. The House will be in session on Monday, February 25th, 2019.
