Congressional Steel Caucus Vice-Chairman Crawford Responds to U.S. Steel Announcement

1/11/2022

Jonesboro  Today, U.S. Steel announced a $3 billion expansion in the First District which will create approximately 900 direct and indirect jobs. Mississippi County and Northeast Arkansas will become the largest steel producing region in America, leading the way for future growth and development across multiple sectors of the American economy.

Representative Rick Crawford (AR-01), Vice-Chairman of the Congressional Steel Caucus, released the following statement in response to this significant announcement:

“The news this afternoon from U.S. Steel is exciting and is a testament to the workforce and environment we have in Northeast Arkansas to support this incredible growth by our steel industry,” said Rep. Crawford. “This expansion will create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs for our area, which will have far reaching impacts across the entire region. I am proud to have supported our local leaders, steel company representatives, and the steel industry as a whole while serving in congress and will continue to advocate for American steel and steelworkers.”

Rep. Crawford is the current Vice-Chairman of the Congressional Steel Caucus, on which he has served since 2017. During his time in congress, Rep. Crawford has testified in front of the International Trade Commission denouncing the dumping of steel by countries like Russia, while also advocating for a regulatory environment in which American steel can flourish and be a global market leader. In the First District, the steel industry generates over $5 billion annually in direct output, over six thousand direct jobs, and over $700 million in wages to employees.
