Rep. Crawford Responds to SCOTUS Ruling on NY Gun Restrictions
6/23/2022
Washington — Today, the Supreme Court struck down a New York gun law and affirmed that the Second Amendment of our Constitution means what it says, that ‘the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” New York’s law required law-abiding individuals to get government permission to exercise their constitutional rights. But SCOTUS ruled that such a law is an affront to the very purpose of our Bill of Rights, which is to impose limits to government’s power over the American people.
“Today’s decision was also important because New York’s law, in practice, had blocked this constitutional right for most law-abiding citizens, while the wealthy and politically-connected were able to secure the government’s permission. The Court rightly struck down this regulatory regime that treated ‘regular’ Americans as inferior to the ‘ruling class’,” said Representative Rick Crawford (AR-01).
Rep. Crawford also joined more than 100 of his colleagues in an amicus brief to the Court, articulating why New York’s law was unconstitutional.
