In the days and weeks following the horrific violence at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut politicians and activists groups have called for new gun laws and restrictions for gun owners. It is unfortunate that some would try to exploit this tragedy.
Debt Not Addressed in Senate’s Fiscal Cliff Plan

On the first day of 2013, the House of Representatives voted to pass the Senate's so-called deal to avert the ‘fiscal cliff'. The Congressional Budget Office has predicted the Senate's deal will add nearly $4 trillion to the national debt over the next ten years. Ultimately I could not vote to support the Senate fiscal cliff plan because it did not do anything to address our nation's spending problem. Permanent spending controls are needed to ensure this Congress, and all future Congresses, do not spend our children and grandchildren into oblivion.

Since the beginning of the school year I have heard from numerous teachers, coaches, and parents about new rules from the Department of Agriculture concerning nutrition standards for school lunches. The new standards drastically cut the number of calories students can consume on a daily basis. In October I hosted a Nutrition Summit in Jonesboro to shed light on the issue and to learn how the new requirements have impacted students in Arkansas and across the Nation.
